Upsilon Mu Zeta History

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Upsilon Mu Zeta Chapter

LaPlace, LA

Serving the River Parishes

There were twelve active members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. from the    New Orleans and the River Parishes who began sharing their interest in chartering a chapter in the River Parishes Area.  They shared a vision of expanding into communities that would benefit from a service oriented group of professional women.  This group of women would enhance the quality of life of the communities through the principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

In June 2005, the twelve Zetas began meeting and developed a strategy to present to the National and Regional leadership of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.  In August 2005, the twelve Zetas met with the Southern Regional Director, Louisiana State Director, and the Area Coordinator to present their reasons    and desire to charter a chapter in LaPlace, LA.  Then the Area Coordinator, Vanora Legaux, decided to join this chapter.  On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast region.  With the devastation from the hurricane, the twelve Zetas were displaced.   Being displaced did not discourage them but energized them to continue  pursuing their mission to charter this chapter.  The chartering would serve the River Parishes Area and enhance the membership of Zeta Phi  Beta Sorority, Inc.

Anxiously awaiting the decision, the approval was finally communicated  in December 2005, with a chartering date of October 22, 2005.  Because the twelve Zetas were trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina, the chartering ceremony and installation of officers for Upsilon Mu Zeta was held on  April 22, 2006 at the St. John the Baptist Parish Library, LaPlace, LA.

Members of the chapter have a heart for community service and enjoy  being in the communities giving of themselves as a way to implement annually many ZHOPE, (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) projects. The members of the chapter have collaborated with many community based agencies and organizations.  These collaborations have enable members to implement and participate in a variety of programs and projects on an annual basis.

In 2008, the chapter saw a need to establish a non-profit component.  The application was submitted and approved for a 501 (c) 3 birthing “The Doves of Peace, Inc.”

Our founders set the foundation for this chapter to continue to embrace and build on the principles of this great sisterhood.

Upsilon Mu Zeta is on the move and will not stop!
